Shifting Smoothly Between Two Disciplines
In talking to ROSS users, we find that thriving legal practitioners master two disciplines: they provide excellent advice to their clients and are nimble in their business models and pricing. Milena Sukovic has mastered both. She took some time to tell us about her practice and about how ROSS helps her succeed.
Milena concentrates her practice in patent prosecution and intellectual property litigation. She has a degree in electrical engineering and experience as a systems engineer for Motorola. Her experience serves as the basis for a wide-ranging practice focused on commercializing technology.
Milena appreciates the fact that ROSS is priced for small firms who may have intensive research needs one month and do little or no research the following month. She spends a significant portion of her billable time on patent prosecution as an attorney on the Xsensus virtual law firm platform. Legal research is not a significant component of her prosecution work.
“Some months I’m working mostly on patent prosecution at Xsensus and wouldn’t want to be spending huge amounts of money on Westlaw when I did not have any need for legal research. But the next month I have an appeal brief due for one of my clients that requires extensive case law research. I couldn’t make that transition in a cost-effective way without ROSS.”
Building a Thriving Litigation Practice
Milena is building her practice, and expanding her business model, by taking on more litigation assignments representing clients directly or as a contract attorney working with former big-firm colleagues.
“I typically represent mid-size companies will annual revenue in the range of $10 million. Companies that size often need sophisticated representation at a lower price point, which larger firms cannot offer.”
“ROSS is priced right for small firm practitioners, as it saves costs and time. Westlaw is incapable of providing me with the flexibility ROSS provides me. ROSS enables me to provide current advice within my clients’ budgets.”
The demands of Milena’s constantly evolving practice would be familiar to many small firms. “I recently had a client in the UK looking for a memo on potential liability in an anticipated lawsuit. I had to research proper venue, substantive law, and also distinguish design patent issues from trade dress issues. I rely on ROSS to tackle such an array of complex research issues.”
“ROSS is much better priced than Westlaw, and has provided me with cases I could not find there. Free tools, like Google, do not suffice. ROSS enables me to keep my clients happy by providing them with up to date legal advice, which falls within their budget.”
ROSS also gives Milena the confidence to expand her practice beyond her core IP expertise. “Once clients like your work, they ask you to do more. For example, I was recently asked to provide advice in an employment matter. With ROSS, I came up to speed quickly. It was great to be able to support my client in a new area of law.”
